COLLEGE FOOTBALL - WEEK 14

COLLEGE FOOTBALL - WEEK 14

It’s all come down to this.  Now there are four…or five…or maybe 8.  Either way, around 11 pm tonight the final four will be set.  Pretty safe to say the SEC champ and ACC champ are in.  Beyond that, it all comes down to Baker Mayfield and how much of a hard on the committee has for Urban Meyer.

Recently TOB has noticed a commercial that shows a 10 year old kid who is intentionally gender neutral (TOB thinks it’s a boy, LOB thinks it’s a girl) running around town playing on her IPAD or whatever the latest tablet is.  The child is snapping pictures, drawing with a stylus, making a webpage of some sort about bugs of the city.  Pretty standard crappy commercial, until the end when a neighbor asks, “What are you doing on your computer?” and said child responds with, “What’s a computer?”  TOB gets the message, this tablet is far from a computer.  However, are we to assume this kid’s parents don’t have a desktop and/or laptop in the home?  This kid doesn’t go to school where there are computers in EVERY classroom?  This kid doesn’t watch TV where every program shows people in an office with computers?  TOB grew up in the 90’s when typewriters were a thing of the past.  However, TOB was and still is aware of what a typewriter is!

If we forget the past, we are doomed to repeat it.  The next logical step for this kid is to be lugging around a typewriter.  This poor kid is doomed.

While it’s been a crazy season, it has occurred to TOB’s buddy Dragon that perhaps every year is full of upsets and unlikely outcomes, we just forget because the football season is so short.  Possible, but TOB would prefer to freak out every Saturday night in the fall and remain prisoner of the moment (you know, like that retarded kid in the tablet commercial).  Check out the top 10 from the preseason rankings:

1.     Alabama

2.     Ohio State

3.     Florida State

4.     USC

5.     Clemson

6.     Penn State

7.     Oklahoma

8.     Washington

9.     Wisconsin

10.  Oklahoma State

Save for the winner of Auburn/Georgia, three of those top 10 will likely end up in the CFP.  Not bad AP Poll, not bad at all.

The uncertainty of this last weekend and the endless amount of PAC12, and BIG10 people getting butt hurt are leading to the clamoring for an 8 team playoff again.  Boo I say!  If the top 8 made it, this weekend would be exciting, but it would not have the same sizzle.  We have 1 vs 7, 4 vs 8, 2 vs 6, all with the winners expected to make the final.  If we go to 8, those games are still fun, but lack the urgency.

“But TOB, then the teams from 9-12 will feel that push and those games will be great.  We need to find the champion on the field, not by some random ranking system.  It’s a joke.”  - Mike Golic, probably.  TOB was initially a fan of the BCS, and any other way that keeps the regular season fun.  The champion is settled on the field, you know, all season when they play.  Golic has an NFL mentality where about 40% of the teams make the playoffs and then it’s a crapshoot.  In week 15 of this NFL season, the Steelers will play the Patriots.  Both teams will probably be 12-2 or 11-3, the class of the AFC.  The NFL is salivating at that game, and it will probably be great.  However, both winner and loser will be firmly in the playoffs, so how much does it matter really?  TOB doesn’t want that to happen to his beloved college football season.

Now for the segment that Vegas is trying to get TOB to stop running, Tony and Cheech make picks sure to go wrong!

Last weeks’ results:

Cheech (30-23-2) – 2-3

UK (+10.5) over Louisville, because I used to live in Lexington. - LOSS

Ohio State (-12) over Michigan, because I live in Ann Arbor. - LOSS

Indiana (+2.5) over Purdue, because I used to live in Indiana. - LOSS

Rice (+12.5) over North Texas, because I was born in Houston. - WIN

Clemson (-13) over South Carolina, because I lived in South Carolina for a summer. - WIN

TOB (16-33-1):  1-4, So uh, yeah, hopefully bowl season works out

Georgia Tech (+11.5) over Georgia – LOSS

Ohio State (-13) over Michigan – LOSS

Memphis (-29.5) over East Carolina – WIN…BIG

Alabama (-5) over Auburn – LOSS

Minnesota (+17.5) over Wisconsin – LOSS

This week:

Cheech:

No picks.  Cheech is resting his starters for bowl season.

TOB:

Memphis (+7.5) over UCF – Riding the hot hand.  Keep that scoreboard rolling Memphis!

Oklahoma (-7) over TCU – Baker “Hold my dick” Mayfield will keep rolling into the final four.  Character flaws are typically ignored for talent (Ray Lewis, Dez Bryant, etc.), but Manziel may have put a turd in the punchbowl for Mayfield.  Could slip to a lower round since he doesn’t “look like a football player” even though he appears to have plenty of talent.  Can’t wait for teams to draft Sam “I’m confused” Darnold as the number 1 or 2 quarterback and watch him become Matt Leinhart 2.0.  Suck it USC (and TOB’s personal rival, Steve Gerring, hope the baby is doing well).

Georgia (+1) over Auburn – Auburn turns into a pumpkin.  Sorry bout it.

Clemson (-10) over Miami – Keep that turnover chain on ice.  Pitt?  Really?  Pitt?!

Ohio State (-4.5) over Wisconsin – TOB originally saw this line at 7, and would have taken Wisconsin.  This should be a one score game…which means it won’t be.

Good year overall for the Irish, even if it ended in disappointing fashion.  Never expected them to go 9-3, they were probably a year early in their development with this crop of players.  Now go win a good bowl and get yourself ranked in the preseason top 10!

GO IRISH!
